Warantless Wiretapping

I'm sure you've heard in recent months about that the Bush administration had been granting "warrantless" wiretaps of communications between suspected Al Qaeda operatives and those in the country.

Alot would agree that the Bush administrations has acted illegally, infringing the privacy of others. While the administration argues that such bold actions are necessary to defeat the enemy, critics are calling for the President to be censured or even impeached.

This may lead into a larger debate? Such as, should a government be able to exert so much power in times of uncertainty?

Discuss.

We've been getting closer and closer to 1984 ever since Bush took office. But with Bush screaming terrorism. Nobody is willing to stand up against it, for fear of being called unamerican.

It seems like there are people willing to do something about it, but they're disconnected and lack direction. It's too bad.

I suppose the "either with us or against us" statement really had its effect. :P

I agree, it is like becoming like 1984.... war is peace. freedom is slavery. ignorance is strength except without the brainwashing and forbidden sex for pleasure dealy hahah.

I wonder if the ends justify the means, the government has no right to listen in on other people's lives without them knowing.

Well my grandpa worked for TSA, basically the united states air port security thing bush put in. His computer, and phones are tapped. He knows, but if he gets rid of them they only put them back. They mess up that computer so much.....

I heard that they only listen in on conversations if key words are used. Like if you say "my car went over to the Bomb-House station and is probably going to explode. But yea, I will meet you at the Empire State Building tomorrow." They will listen in.

That isn&#39;t the point. The point is that this is supposed to be a free country, and the right the PRIVACY is supposed to be one of our most sacred rights. Screening internet traffic isn&#39;t that bad because there&#39;s no real expectation of privacy on the net. Phone conversations ARE supposed to be private, the government has no right to listen in no matter what their intentinos.

We really aren&#39;t very far away from being issued governemnt ID cards, and being checked at random screening points. If you&#39;re paying attention to the house of reps. you&#39;d know that the idea for Citizen ID cards (photo ID like a liscence) has already been brought up.

The thing that kills me is that 40 years ago Bush would have been ranting against communism, and now he&#39;s bringing this country closer to communism than Russia was in the 50&#39;s.

It shouldnt matter unless you&#39;ve got something to hide.

My dad has to listen in on a couple of calls for his job. To test the lines he designed work ^_^
