For best compatibility I find it best to buy the same brand name, but if they have the WiFi certficiation label (and it's ligit) then you should be okay.
But by your description, it sounds like your router.* You can't switch to 802.11b?* Also have you checked for firmware updates?
Btw, interferance doesn't have to be just in your house, it could be from next door or across the street.* Have you tried putting both within 2 meters of each other, and did it work then?* If yes, then most prob interferance from some external source (ie. outside of your house).
