Does anyone know how to use skins for Windows XP (with the hacked DLL). I need some help asap!
i'm not sure precisely i just used windows blinds, a cracked version... it didn't exactly help me understand it but back then i just wanted a new skin but it made my pc slow with the amount of space it used.. bext asking metalskin he's a chest of knowledge
what kinda style? Vista style?
get styleXP, the dll hack is very difficult to make work
A lot of people don't know this about me, but I am a GUI FREAK
styleXP is really good, its a reasonable size and you can customize pretty much everything with it :)
I use Windowblinds and desktopx for the widgets and all that funky jazz!!!!!
i'm not so up with the theme area, though i know bits and peices. Have a gander at the link:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/in...hp/t339820.html
It will dispell a lot of the hearsay about theme hackin under windows. To quote from the link:
Note that the link provides some resources for editing themes that are very handy, so check em out and have fun!Quote:
Q: Why don’t people use Stylexp?
A: The uxtheme hack has several advantages over Stylexp.
-the uxtheme hack is simple. You simply replace the file with a hacked one and that’s it. No installations, no need to run and configure programs, no hassle.
-the uxtheme hack does not waste resources. Stylexp patches uxtheme.dll in memory, but the uxtheme hack replaces the file physically on the system. This means that you are unlocked forever (until Microsoft creates a new uxtheme.dll file).
-the uxtheme hack is completely free!
Yeah I can get you a free download of windows blinds. I also use desktop x, cursor xp, bootskin and logon studio. I got my OS pimped out!
google search for uxtheme.dll hack. you should find an installer for it somehwere. most likely customize.org has it.
Install the hack. Download the themes and move them to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\ and then double click on the theme file. That's all.
thanks unit i'm going to try that :)
I don't want to have anything loading in the beginning of my computer because that'll just slow it down. I'll try styleXP though...
Are there any programs that don't startup every single time?
have a look at the link i provided then. StyleXP runs a program that modifies a standard windows dll to modify the style, this increases your overhead.
The link i posted talks about modifying the standard windows dll so that:
1. there is no overhead
2. its free
3. no need to download an purchase (or crack) a third party software (eg StyleXP).
Most of these third party theme sofware solutions just hack the standard dll and use the windows theme file format to generate themes. I beleiev that you can actualy download themes from StyleXP site and use em with the link i posted, as well as a whole heap of others, because they use the windows standard.
Indeed they do e.g windows blinds was one of such programs..
It even came with an editing interface which consisted of set frames which allowed you to edit in paint or other programs such like it, but still had a background source from where it ran from which used too much virtual memory, where as after doing my homework styleXP does not so i'm happy to go along with it.
The method I suggested does not load a program. uxtheme.dll hack, just patches the already existing file. Which is how you get windows skins at currents. That's why I use this method, because it does not use any system resources at all.Quote:

im not sure about previous versions of styleXP but i just downloaded the latest version 3.13 i think and in the options of the program you can set it so that it does not use any system resources at all :D
That's kind of...impossible. Unless it's just doing a uxtheme.dll hack itself and not running at all. If a program is running, even in the background, then it's eating up resources.Quote:
