I'm getting a 404 error.
odd :S wait a sec.....Fixed.
1/3 cannot essentially be compared to a decimal number fullly, and therefore the statement is not true. It also involved the laws of infinity.
Well after you get like to 50th place or something, it becomes so precise that nothing can measured with a number that small, so it considered one. Or something like that..
=)
I couldn't care
And as far as im concerend 0.99999999999 =that and not 1.
And why are you reading that lawlzorz
It's true!
Give me a number between 1 and 0.99999999.... if they were different numbers, then there would be a third number in between.
42.
Heres the proof muah. Hope you can read my messy writing.... I do write neater on paper haha

This just proves why infinity is flawed.
Infinity isn't flawed. Until you find the end of the universe, that is.
UNiverse is always expanding ;) So infinity is too. even then there are parallel dimensions and black holes etc to be explored :)
I agree with sublime, the answer is 42.
Well, by our standards, what is infinity?
The universe by scientific standards is not infinite, but really does have an edge.
As for the facft about .9999.... = 1, it is not, becusase there is always the .1, .01, .001...... missing.
.1, .01, .001.....are infact numbers. Most of you people now look at it by saying " What is the number inbetween them?!?!? HUH Tell me that!!!!!! "
All I have to say is this, have you thought about .99999999....999...999 ½ ???
Most of you say well, you cant have a fraction in a decimal number, and I ask why not?
what the hell...
0.99999999 = excatly that
It does not equals 42 get your head sorted.
rofl Obviously somebody hasn't seen hitchhikers guide to the galaxy...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Shadowcode @ Jun 23 2006, 09:42 AM) </div>Well first of all, infinity is the concept defined as never-ending. There is no other 'standard' to adhere to. If it actually had an end, then creating such a concept would be redundant.Quote:

You can't have 0.000....1 missing since 0.99999.... is a REPEATING/RECURRING decimal, it will never have an end and since it doesn't have an end, there is no 0.000.....1 to end it with.
i <3 shurai :D
lol
it's about rounding to the nearest, that's what is about
http://polymathematics.typepad.com/polymat..._sorry_it_.html
thats like porn for nerds :D
and it doesn't... no matter how far you go down, it will never equal EXACTLY 1.
Well, if you think about it makes sense.
Everything is made of atoms. Atoms are made up of electrons and protrons.
Electrons are what matter (they decide what molecule they make up).
You can't brake up a electron. Physically impossible.
So, in theory, (physically), you can't EVER have a number smaller then one. =P
Well for the sake of it not getting too complicated lets just agree that 0.999999999rec = 1 :P
2 + 2 can equal 5
lol...
how the hell is 0.999999=1
it misses 0,000001
that site is wrong.
It's not 0.99999, its 0.9999.. repeating. Which means it doesn't terminate, which means there is no 0.000000.....1 to account for.
This thread is great. One of the longest threads I've seen about a repeating decimal. Actually, the ONLY thread I've seen about a repeating decimal.
I'm going to be honest, it doesn't matter to me if .99999999999repeating = 1, cause I don't really care that much. I just look at it this way...If my boss said he was going to cut my pay from 1 dollar an hour to .999999repeating an hour. I'd still be happy...I'd just wanna see that bastard cut a penny into .99999repeating parts...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Shadowcode @ Jun 23 2006, 11:42 AM) </div>Hey buddy, half a decimal would be .99999999999999995 which isn't posible since it repeats forever.Quote:
