Photography Wannabe

Hello, okay, lemme explain what happened first. In our school, there's this one week called Horizons Week: Where all the people in our school gets one week off proper school work and they get to choose an activity the school has provided.
So I chose Digital Photography, cause I always wanted to learn how to take proper photographs. I don't really know anything about taking "proper" photographs and I know there's some photographers here in CX so I was wondering if any of you guys can give me any tips to start me off.

Umm, I'm not really using my digital camera, because the school is providing them, I'll check it out when I'm back at school, I got a week holiday :P

they'll probably get a canon powershot, if it's digital... something along those lines, they won't get D70's that's for sure XD.

My advice for photographers, advice that I got recently that I'm really trying to follow myself.
-Take photos, and lots of them, the nice thing about digital is that you can analyze the photos without paying for them to be developed. Which is nice. The only thing that I don't like about digital is that you don't learn how the camera works, you just hit a button, and it saves the picture, you don't learn about the aperature, shutter speed, special tricks you can do to fool with both, along with the light meter etc. If you are going to buy a digital, buy a good fast one(with a really fast start up time) I'd suggest the Nikon D50, with a .2 second start up and >8 megapxls.

-I suggest watching a ton of photographers on dA too, I'll give you the best ones that I've collected over the last 6 months, I've got a ton of them, and you can just look at their compositions, they are all really amazing, and you will learn so much by just asking them how they find all their angles etc.

-Personally, I shoot film, for several reasons. You have a different type of control. With a digital, you have a ton of control over what kind of picture you want to take etc, but you don't really have control if you don't know what any of those functions do, or if you stick to only 2 of them. That's why I shoot film, because my camera doesn't overload me with settings, I choose them all. Fully manual is really nice, that's why you should get an expensive digital if you are going to buy one, because otherwise you won't have that option.

Telephoto vs macro, theres a lot of diversity between the shots that you can take, which is nice, but it's best to learn on one versatile lens.

I suggest shooting analog first not sure if silenced said that :) (ive read it tho ) then you know what everything means Then I suggest buying a good digicam with changeable lenses. Canon eos serie is very good

well it matters exactally what you want to shoot, I like nature, so I shoot nature shots... I also like urban/rural, I'll post some links after, to all the best photographers.

Well, from what the organiser of the activity said, we will be taking some nature photographs, some human photographs. We might be taking some photos of urban areas
We might be going to some other places, but I'm not sure..But I'm definately sure about the things that I mentioned above. If you need more information, I can ask about it or something. :P

Don't stop taking photos, because for like the first 5 years, your photos WILL SUCK. Mine still do, and I've been doing it for 3-4 years now. Take a lot of photos because you don't want that 5 year period to turn into a 20 year one. You will like your photos, and think that they are good, and maybe a couple of other people will too, but to get consistently good photos, you have to take a lot of them. So don't stop taking them, and show them to other people!

Lol yup, good point. That was a stupid note I made. The activity starts at around November 14th. But I'm posting this earlier so that I can get tips from you guys ;) .
