The reason so many people use DA is that they can express themselves freely and they can rest assured their work is safe and easily proven to be theirs...
DA owning it is just like showing something you're gona use in a TV program and then getting sued for something you made...
It's a shit idea. But if you check the policy and look at point number 5. They have to ask you if they can use a piece before they actually are going to. If they do not they are screwed. means that everything is fine. But..its a good reason to boycott this damn website. bitches with the rules and stuff..

it is dumb, because technicially they are saying they own it, even if they have to get ur permission or not
If they do not ask you and you see them using your art, you can sue dA.

I just read my way through it and I don't really see what the problem is. From what I gather they are saying they can use your work in any adds or in the promotion of the site but only after an agreement with the artist. They can also change the size of your piece for almost any reason, but they would have to have that clause in there so they don't get sued for the thumb nail preview or any of the other small shots or detail shots of the piece. Also with a list of information covering their ass for prints and distribution. I don't see what anyone would have a problem with to be honest.
Though if you don't trust it use Shadowness or stop being lazy and make your own website to show off your work. =p
Also people have been saying this for as long as I can remember and they have always been wrong.
Someone posted about this before, saying they can use your artwork for anything they want, since they own it legally, without you knowing.
Who knows, they might of read it wrong, but since CK read it all through, i'll go by his word.
I don't see how this is a big deal. They aren't saying the own you, from what I see they just ask for your permission and if you want you can give them the rights and be nice. Trust me, doing this for them would not be 1% of what dA has done to you. They're just looking to further-advertise their site. For the service they have been giving you, that's the least they could ask for.

dA has over 10 MILLION IMAGES! I bet only the hosting costs them LOADS! i'm talking about things you will never be able to pay urself, unless ur a REALLY rich mofo.
all the advertisements, mostly google ads, like anyone has ever made real money out of that, r probably going to the hosting and for stuff like paying for coders, etc. I bet the $1000 extra they get goes for paying the rent.

plus, they aren't kids, they're grown people. they need to make a living. and it's not easy money either, because trust me, building and maintaining a site like dA is not like stealing a candy from a baby.

Option 1: Stay at DA and accept policy
Option 2: Leave DA, (do you have a subscription?: when the policy changes you are allowed to break the contract, at least in the Netherlands)
