My First Pixel Art

here is my first attempt at pixel art. i was browsing a few forums and different websites displaying some really complex pixel art and i had to give it a try. i started out just making a building and it developed into this little town scene. everything was done using only the pencil and paintbucket tools (as well as a pixelated grunge brush, which you might notice on the buildings).

although it is my first pixart, i did put a lot of work into the little details, like the soda machine :D . hope you enjoy and let me know what you think!

Wow, that looks great man. The only thing that I notice that needs fixing would be the pizza, it seems like the perspective isnt correct.

How did you learn how to do pixel art anyways?

thx for the comment weasel. i'm not sure how much you know about pixart, if at all, but i'll give you the "basic idea." pixel art is a form of art in which everything you draw is based entirely on pixels (the tiny squares that make up your monitor's display). sure, everything on the web is made up of pixels, but pixart is a distinct style all in its own. search the web for pixart and you'll get a feeling of a what it's all about. there are many variations of it, the particular style i did is called "isometric" pixel art because of the angle at which the picture is portrayed. hope this helps, i plan on doing a tut on this style soon so stay tuned.

i learned basically by searching the web for tutorials on the isometric style, lighting, texturing, etc. i found a lot of conflicting viewpoints on which way is best to do isometric pixart, but i found that the "1-up 2-across" method works best. this means that, when making straight lines from the isometric viewpoint, for every pixel that you move up you must move 2 across, which you can see in the zoomed in pic below:

i actually created my own brush pack for pixart, consisting mainly of different size lines (which is a huge advantage, you really don't want to spend your whole day drawing pixel by pixel). i also made my own brick texture which save a lot of time as well.

too, long... i worked on it in bits and pieces over the period of about a week whenever i had some spare time. but i think the final result was worth it.

looks great man, i started doing some a while ago but never got it finished, i had never seen a tutorial like the one you posted tho, all the one si saw just said what to make it look like not how to actually do it, which were no help at all

i was thinking back to the original sim city, and sim ant, now that was crazy.. pixel art for ants and associated creatures.

yeah, it was back in um... .bout 89 i think... would have been before doom. but about the time wolfenstein first came out. now there is some pixel art for you!

wasnt original sim city brideye veiw, 2000 was the first isometric one..

ant came out after the orig sim city. so that would put sim city around um.. 88 maybe 87. i thought all cim cities were isometric, but i could be wrong. i shuold have it still at home, i'll have a gander tonight and let you know.

I dont have the patiance to make something like that...... so i dont. But that is pretty kool. I like the highlighting and shadowing.

Nice job man..its very simple and good lookin! I think it would be awesome if you had like animation of a guy walking around there or some battle scene for it! it would look great!..just an idea though..

ya i'm workin on people and cars especially. they're so tough to make tho and the only real tut i found online was for this really oddshaped car that didn't fit my scene at all. i've tried makin my own but after spending a half hour or so, i realized it wasn't to scale and scratched it. i do intend to add on to this tho :D.

thats pretty sweet, its amazing what you can do with pixel art, i have not tried it myself, not enough patience, but what i have seen is awesome/.

ya db, i actually reference that site fairly often, a lot of good work on there. i started some people and vehicles last night. i'll post an updated version soon.

Looks pretty nice. :) Although there are some things that are "wrong". First of all the sidewalk misses two lines at the stop sign. And that pizza looks wrong, just like Taco said.
Great work though! I used to do pixel art a while ago, so I know some about it. :)
