Abstract Cyclone Tutorial

btw, this is my first tutorial, but i think you will be pleased with the results :)

1. Open a new document, black background and white foreground.
For this we'll be using a 500x500 sized document.

2. Filter > Render > Clouds
Filter > Render > Different Clouds

3. Control-I (Image > Adjustments > Invert);
Control-L (Image > Adjustments > Levels); set the second number (default 1.0) to '.10'.

4. Control-B (Image > Adjustments > Color Balance);
Set the numbers (left to right) as: 0, 40, 100 (good blue color).

5. Filter > Blur > Radical Blur (Method: Zoom; Quality: Best; Amount: 21);
Click (in the blur box) the top-left corner, so thats the 'center' of the blur...

6. Filter > Render > Lens Flare (Top-Left corner, 136% amount, 105mm Prime).


** From here on we'll be altering it into a Vortex **
7. Right-click your layer > Duplicate Layer;
set mode to 'Lighten'http://img201.exs.cx/img201/3775/40hh.th.png
, then control-E
(Layer > Merge-Down) to merge the layers.

8. Right-click your layer > Duplicate Layer;
Set mode to 'Lighten', then Filter > Disort > Twirl (amount: 300).

Control-E (Layer > Merge-Down) to merge the layers.

9. Repeat step 8, except set twirl amount to -600.

10. Control-B (Image > Adjustment > Color Balance)
and set the numbers (left-to-right) as: 0, 40, 100.

We now got an awesome vortex of lightning :D

also you can play with the color levels before you merge layers to get something like this:

My lord thats a sexy effect - I love it mate!! For future tutorials, I suggest you use ImgHst, as ImageShacks have servers are rather slow over the past few weeks.

Great tutorial, I LOVE the effect. To help out noobies, I suggest you add a few more images, but I believe you get the overall effect across.

This would rank in my top 3 tutorials, very nice. Is it ok if I submit this one?

I'm totally new to Photoshop, only been using it for about 3 days, and I got totally different results...I've tried 4 times already and it keeps turning out the same...would it be possible for you to supply some pictures in the tutorial to help me out a little?

I think this is wrong ? Might be that we should have some " Filter > Disort > Twirl " Or else this doesn't do anything at all.

um great tut.. one problem is i couldnt not figure out how to "lighten as you say do in step 8.. how do u lighten i think it would be a perfect 20/ out of 10 tut if u make more specific how to do that.. i actually understood this tut

pepsi right click the layer then goto blending options then blend mode click where it says normal then Lighten.

It's in the layers pallette, to the left of the opacity to be exact.

wow didn't think there would b many problems with this tut, but i'll go ahead and make some pics for ya guys B)

btw holm, that is just the first step in the vortex part, you have to add a layer with the lighten part, or you get something different, the in the next two steps you add the twirls :)

Yeah i noticed at first you have to make a new layer at the very begining of the tut. But, this is a great looking one!

sadly since i do not pay them the quality isnt as good as it really is but it still looks nice, thanks alot to you and everyone else who has made a tutorial here, I have gotten so much better with Photoshop now and I have even been expirimenting on my own&#33;
