I only (halfway) like rap that really has something to say. Pretty much the only rap song that I've ever really enjoyed is "Forgot about Dre" by Eminem.

That was the era I just started getting into rap, although I personally enjoy 'Still Dre' more. I'm not a huge fan of Em though. Minor - you should check out some of Outkasts old shit, or some Common, old Nas, etc. All has a lot of meaning.

DJ Dangermouse made an awesome mix of Jay-Z's black album and the Beatles white album, dubbed the Grey Album. It's really really good, I always thought the Black album didn't have enough energy to match Jay-Z's vocal power. The Grey Album really equlizes that, especially with songs like 99 problems and PSA. Only available online...for free of course. That site has the story and provides a link to a torrent to download it. You can usually find some of the songs on Limewire or Kazaa but they're scattered and some of them are misnamed, etc.
