I'm wondering which one to get . . . ?
do they have tons of different changes and layouts in the newer versions ?
I want a retro- feel since I haven't used photoshop for a long time, would I still be able to download CS4 and recognize everything ? ( from like cs2, photoshop 7 and cs1 or w.e )

All I can say is CS4 needs a fair amount of memory to run. Bare in mind as you are running CS4, you'll be running an OS, probably a web browser, a chat client and so on.
I had CS3 and for my needs it was fine, and ran well on XP with a gig of ram.

I currently use CS4 extended and I love it. The only downside is that my computer can't run some of its 3d capabilities due to my crappy graphics card.

I use CS2 and I think it's fine.
Really this all comes down to a few things.
- Your Budget
- Your PC Specs
- Where you want your Graphics skills to go
If you want to just play around for fun, sigs and stuff, then CS2 will be the best option as it's the cheapest and easiest to run. If you want to be more dedicated and design websites, 3D arts, Large images, etc, then CS4 would be the better option.

I've tried all of them but chose to stick with cs3. As said earlier, cs4 uses alot of memory

If you have previous experience then use whichever you are most familar with. There are aspects with CS4 which really annoys me, like the automated feature for making contact sheets has changed (you have to do it in adobe bridge now!) and the extraction tool has disappeared, but because CS4 is the version my university uses, I have to be familar with it. I'd say out of the 3 of them though, CS3 would be the best ;)

I use CS4 Portable which is optimized for lower ram users, as me who has 512mb ram. No problem to have many programs running at the same time ;)

I've been using CS2, then pause. I've been using CS3, then pause. And now i am using CS4 and i feel comfortable working in it. Actually i don't really see huge improvements between them, except CS4 interface change, but as i said, after a pause you don't care which one you're using.
