Its nice and simple
Updated with alternate.
a little highlighted and shadowedareas on the skulled moon would look better.
at the moment it looks too flat.
IDK if you would agree with me but gradient's, especially black/white, look good on simple texts like this, especially when the background is black. I like the second one.
You just don't get it, do you, lol. I don't do gradients and shit like that. It's the result of a screen printing in real life scanned in and then treated with the computer. Simplicity is the key and flat text always looks better :D
says who...
[/CODE]Err...says 12 years of experience working as a creative professional in the Industry... I didn't add gradients because I wanted people's eyes to be attracted to the main element of the picture, the text is really a non-entity and I see no reason to draw attention to it. People have a brain, it'll inevitably get spotted being right there under the main element. These are considerations one takes when designing for the industry. I keep saying it. Filter whoring is all very well and good, but only gets you so far.
Ok I get what you do. And.I know you are good at it. But this Is a wallpaper it's not something you woul use to advertise so what's the point in using all these communication techniques? I would only use them if working for a client, not just to make a desktop wallpaper. I do like the second one but it looks more of a logo stuck in the middle of the canvas, I would add a bit more.
Well, you're still a kid. And entitled to your opinion. But when you reach my age your opinion will indubitably change. I've never seen any particular reason to use filters-en-totale just because it's not for a client. When I do wallpapers it's to keep my techniques and skills sharp. I did, in fact, try it with gradient text and it just looked crap, so I kept it flat and it works better, in my opinion.
In my experience, everything is for the client. Whether or not it's actually for them. Everything you do adds to your repertoire of displayable work when approaching new clients whether it's just a wallpaper or a tag. At all times one must show competency in the area of design (for me, anyway), because you never know where your next client is coming from. Someone from a company might be browsing DeviantART idly one day and happen across my profile. Now if it's full of crap, they're going to pass me idly by. But if I show that I'm dedicated to my competency, then you never know - they could send me a message wanting to discuss a comission. Get where I'm coming from?
When you put your work out there for the world to see, never do something just because, it rarely works and makes your work look uninformed and unconsidered.
This particular piece is actually a variation of one of the original wolf-man movie posters from the 40's, so I didn't really see the need to add a bunch of crap that would detract away from its classical nature.
On the note of wallpapers: I always like to make them fucntional with design. This means leaving plenty of negative space to fit all your icons on without having a confusing visual jumble of colour.
As i said before: Good design says 'look at this!' not 'Look at me!' In my job people want designers, not mac-monkeys.
And, moreover, it's my style and one that has brought me great success over the years. You have your style and I'm sure it'll bring you a modicum of success also. But as a professional designer, in my opinion, you know very little about design from what I have seen. But I can't hold that against you since you're still a pup. I just offer my stuff in the hope that someone will be able to take something from it to inform their own design, since that's essentially what designers do, steal the best ideas to inform their own designs or look back at History to inform the future.
1) If all those filters and things were crap they wouldnt be coming with the package of photoshop.
And i too believe in the saying "simplicity is the key to success", and that is why i just suggested gradients. Classical oldstyle wallpapers also contained extra elements of design like splattered letters and all. Old Bookman style font was most used in those days. I am not saying that you do the same.
But.. A movie wallpaper needs to be attractive, You have to either go with the trends or change them. You cannot recreate a trend that wont be used ever. These styles are not too attractive nowadays. I would take an example of the simple but effective wallpaper/poster of the Incredible movie "Valkyrie".
Negative space is not always necessary in a design. I would obstruct there. But since you are wanteing it to be simple, negative sapce is a must. And as a normal viewer (unknown to the world of design) i would love to see extra elements that play along with the negative space. Like a little lighting on the skull that makes it looks more scarier or stuff (idk what the movie is about) but you have to make a wallpaper that shows the purpose or the type of the movie. And yah FYI, adding filters or making minor changes is not a bunch of crap.
And if you do everything for the client that adds to the displayability of the client, i dont think you achieved much this time, reading the comments.
I really like your style of artworks, but every style has its own limits :)

One of the most famous movie posters ever from one of the most famous designers ever. It's a trend that hasn't died out and still informs modern day design in movies:
http://radio-weblogs.com/0104723/My%...can%20copy.jpg
It's no good you looking out there and saying 'That's the trend' when you've done no research into the history of said trend, or have no data on how the designer reached that particular consesus of design.
Hollywood movie posters are mostly bullshit. Any designer worth his salts will tell you this. They're designed specifically to draw people in to watch the film and put a lot of glossy elements in to draw in these people. They follow the basic principles of design, but add a tonne of unecessary elements just because, as you pointed out, people want to be wowed. And it's absolutely no good sitting there saying "well, that's how everyone else is doing it, so that's how it must be done" design doesn't work that way. If design did work that way we'd never have had people like David Carson and people would still be hand-painting 'commercial advertising'.
Design is about following yourself, not following the crowd. Otherwise all you're doing is regurgitating everyone else's ideas.
There's large scope for alternate styling out there, like this:

Filters are there to be used, but not over-used. Primarily the filters are more for the purposes of photography than design (that is, after all, why it's called photoshop. Most designers I know and work with barely use photohop (I aint used it in a while myself), they use illustrator or (shock horror) a pencil!
that made my work simple.
so you see, you need to add extra elements is what i wanted to show. Every one of the posters you displayed has elements that cover up the canvas or create a flow to look at the main subject. Thats what i wanted to point out.
I see where you are coming from with the always stay sharp thing. I realise that I am young and I haven't been to school etc... Congratz, I now agree with you:)
" or (shock horror) a pencil!"
btw i use pencil:p
Your not the only person on this entire forum that has experience in art/design school. Honestly, your work its pretty good, some better than others, but your attitude ruins any chance I had of truly seeing your work purely as art. Instead of acting as if your better than everyone and constantly misdirecting ever ounce of criticism that comes your way, take it into consideration, who knows, you might find something useful or creative. You can downplay filters all you want, truth is, I rarely use them, but they are part of design, get use to it. As for illustrator "or (shock horror) a pencil!" I use both in most of my work, which is why I feel your underestimate the majority of people on this site.
As for your piece, I really think its good, and I love the simplicity. Its very well done.
and the skull doesn't even blend in to the planet.. mmm if this is supposed to be an idea ok, otherwise it needs a lot off work imo.
