AIDS Walk

Hey everyone!
i know most of you have little money to spare, but i'm walking in the AIDS walk in NYC soon!
i have set a personal fundraising goal of $1,000 (i know, its a lot...) and i would be so amazed if i were able to reach it, but i won't be able to unless i start asking around.

The money will go directly to GMHC (Gay Mens' Health Crisis) which is a completely non-profit, volunteer-run organization that invests in scientific research, legal time and advocacy, and most importantly in the lives of those who suffer from HIV/AIDS. GMHC helps over 15,000 families affected by HIV/AIDS in NYC by giving them shelter, education, medical assistance, emotional and financial support and more importantly a shoulder to lean on.

In New York there are more than:
126,849 people diagnosed with HIV
77,544 people diagnosed with AIDS

and in NYC alone there are more than 214,870 people who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS

GHMC can only help 15,000 of those people, but with every dollar we earn we can raise the bar, and bring science a step closer to new medications, vaccinations and maybe even a cure.

a lot of AIDS/HIV cases are actually passed from mother to child very often through breastfeeding. Most people who have HIV/AIDS don't actually know they have it, and may breastfeed a child thus passing on the disease. It's a vicious cycle... which is why i need to raise money :)

AIDS can be caught so many different ways. Even Blood transfusions can have a slight risk of giving AIDS to someone. Tattooist, or even doctors for that fact, that don't use sterilized needles can transfer AIDS.

Not everything revolves around Sex and not every sufferer is a slut that sleeps with 20 people. It's a disease that is spread by blood, and that can be transferred so many different ways.

Wow, it's no one's fault to get AIDS, I don't think any one person would want that. You could be helping someone who was injured and if you touch their blood and then rub your eye, you have aids. It's a serious matter and not everyone who is affected got it from sex.

Don't wanna be a prick here but really, lots of people nowadays are very, VERY irresponsible with their sexual life and pay little regard to it. Its only when its too late that they realize what they have done. In a sense and to an extent I agree with Elipse, because lets be real, besides hereditary passing (right way to phrase to it? lol) unprotected sex with an infected partner is probably one of the top 3 leading causes of HIV in persons in the world today. Of course, in no way will I ignore that in a lot of those situations, there were mass amounts of rape. A perfect example of this would be Africa. Or even peer pressure where lots of teens and young people really don't think but act on impulse to impress others or be accepted. (This is looking at it from a narrow point of view; don't feel like researching and all that shit) But yeah, thats the reality we are living in. So to pounce of Elipse and call him a prick for what he said would be somewhat silly, however understandable because I too also think he hasn't looked at it from a wide enough perspective. Nonetheless it does not mean what he has said has no merit though as Pete implied could have said it better. People need to have a more responsible sex life in regards to that particular comment. I don't agree entirely with his statement but yes, that is also fact. Nut and others already covered some other factors concerning the disease.

Great initiative. I don't live in NYC currently but if I did, I would be inclined to join the walk to say the least. Good luck with the venture!f

In 2008 males accounted for 3 out of 4 AIDS diagnoses in the U.S.


The HIV transmission route leading to the most AIDS diagnosis in 2008 was male-to-male sexual contact, followed by injection drug use and heterosexual contact."


So yeah, the three leading causes for aids in the U.S. are not accidental but irresponsible. That is pretty sad, and I guess I see why that makes it harder for some people to give to things like this. :/

one big problem is the misunderstanding of how AIDS is transmitted. You dont have to have sexual intercourse to get AIDS, as long as bodily fluids are transmitted (although you can't get HIV/AIDS from just kissing). people will often know that they have HIV/AIDS but say, "as long as i dont have sex i'm fine," or even not tell their partner about the disease, thus inflicting it upon them.
another big problem is that most people do not know they have HIV/AIDS. 1 in every 5 people who have HIV are not diagnosed with it, let alone reported, so there's no real way in knowing the exact number of cases. When you dont know you have HIV, how are you supposed to know not to spread it, or how to treat it?
regardless of the implications of this disease, it is still a really good cause, and one that i still need some donations for.

Most of aids is because of irresponsible but, i understand people get it genetically but, that just means their parents were irresponsible, sorry if i came out as being a dick, because it really is a deadly disease.

you should donate to redeem yourself.

Ill donate when my next paycheck comes in, its a good cause.

and thanks everyone for paying attention. even if some people are offended by these arguments they are all completely valid, and it means that this issue is on your minds, which is good enough.

so about japan, for whomever said that we should be donating there instead of to AIDS ppls.
the organization receiving this money is actually doing a lot more than just taking care of irresponsible people. Many families have been torn apart trying to pay for these AIDS drugs that are being marked up 1000% of what they're worth because they can. families go homeless because of this, and GHMC helps take these families and put them back into houses. It takes care of the children who have lost their parent(s) because of this disease and teaches them sex education when no one else will even touch upon the subject. GHMC works to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, not just deal with those who have it. and for everyone who says we shouldn't be helping people because they're just irresponsible sex, please tell me you havent ever done something irresponsible, and i'll drop this cause. everybody has done something irresponsible, whether they were drunk or high or just in the spur of the moment, but no one here (that I know of) has had to deal with something as catastrophically devastating as HIV/AIDS. Don't let your misunderstanding, disconnection and lack of empathy get in the way of helping someone in need. I've never been homeless before, but that doesn't mean i won't give my leftovers to someone on the street if i see him or her. I cant persay empathize with them but i can sympathize and use my advantages to help them out of their misfortune.

Okay, all of you who are arguing in here, stfu.

This isn't a "Express your views on how worthy a cause this AIDS walk is", this is for you to donate IF you believe in this cause. So, if you dont like it, dont post about it and start an argument.

However, if you support it, go ahead and donate, if you wanna discuss/ argue w/e about it, do it over PM or make a seperate thread or w/e...
