looks like XP on steriods :P
yeah your programs list pops up on the left, under your name. and i was right about the dark theme. it also seems like they've had a serious look at the mac OSs and incorperated a few gaphical parts, and a few interface options.
my friend has it running on his computer.
I think it's a step up from XP definatly. I'm not sold on there plan to make the file browsing different and leaving the old tree browsing, I don't like the idea of change from XP anyway.
Surely mods and skins will come out to dramatically change the looks, I'd more worry about the functionality of Vista itself. From what I've done on it, IE7 is still critically impared with tabbed browsing. I'm expecting for the lag spikes to be extreme for those with Dell's or less than a gig of memory, because I hit 100% cpu when I click a folder link  . Of course it is a beta, so surely it'll be much better when it comes out...
I actually like the changes, to me it resembles a Mac interface a lot more than a windows though. The screenshots that I found were funny because (as you can see) the resolution is really low!
The dark on light grey skin isnt really cutting it for me... not a huge fan of that at all.
I don't really like the way it looks right now. The skin on the windows is hideous. BUT I think the folder's look awesome. Finally windows is taking some tips from Mac.
wow that is insane
Pretty cool. Didn't know they were makin a new windows. I don't see a whole lot of functionality things that are new. Most of it seems just visual, and that is all stuff that can be attained with skins and icons etc. What exactly is new about it?
It would be neat to get some screen shots of longhorn, although that might be what this is (nobody has said different).
lol, i think its incredible. but then i thoght xp was a massive improvement on 2000. I think Microsoft avoided going to far in the extream skin and gfx integration with XP because a lot of businesses would say "why would we pay for that". Remember, Microsoft's biggest revenue base is companies, not individuals.
Obviously OSX convinced MS differently, as well as recent additions to Gnome and KDE and the massive recent growth in Gui Tweak and skinable additions to windows.
Personaly I like the dark interface, but as allways its a personal thing. :D Can't wait to get my hands on it! Hope they have some 3dfx acceleration on the desktop finally.
:edit:
Found some very high res pics at the microsoft press release page:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/presski...ta/default.mspx
(it works in firefox) also have a gander at this pic:

It's interesting how they now have window transparency, and they have it selective so some of the window dressing is transparent, but important features are not. Very impressive. The big question is, do they use 3d accel to do it or is it software based, i hope its not software based, but i do presume they would use hardware accel.
Vista is the public release name for Longhorn (the codename)Quote:

Metal,
If it is purely hardware accelerated, without an option to use software accel they're going to run into some serious issues with older machines...and some newer...that use onboard video.
yeah, makes sense 43, lookling closely at some of the high res picks it looks like they have a distort on the transparency, so that if the border of the window is a curved glassy texture then it actualy magnifies the underlying objects just like a curved peice of half glass would. Obviously performance would suffer if they didn't do this via hardware.
Hmm... I would think they would provide options for more vanilla screens without the special effects. just like in xp where you can turn off features like menu fading and so forth. as well as changing the skin to the ol w2k skin (which beleive it or not, a lot of the senior people do... sigh).
Does OSX do the proper refraction/magnification type thingo for overlaying transparent windows?
Btw, i am realy starting to like how they have done the transparency, it realy kicks some serious lemmings!
Don't you believe that the hardware compatilbilty or recommended stats to run Vista will be at least 512 megs of ram and a good amount of harddrive space though? I'm pretty sure that you can't get a Dell for less than a good amount of money with a decent amount of RAM and onboard video, although I haven't been to nor seen a Dell in quite a long time.Quote:

I do agree, but why would non-savvy people want to go through the trouble of upgrading anyway. Like they want IE7 or new graphical features and functions. Especially those that would have to back up there files and programs and go through all that jazz. Granted it would make me a hell of a lot of money doing reformatting and installing new copy's of Windows Vista on every home I enter.
Whats wrong woth windows xp? I think it works great on its own. Atleast without SP2 that is.
I dont really like the new GUI. Looks ugly imo. They should make a red and black theme imo. No one has done that yet 0_0
Why is everyone impressed with the transparnecy? You cna do that in xp easily 0_0
The physical memory and hard drive size have nothing to do with hardware/software acceleration. that's all video card. And as you know many companies still use onboard video cards like Trident's or Intel's... Cards that by most accounts can't handle on the fly transparency.Quote:

i really like how it shows the file info along the bottom in a seperate box instead of hovering the mouse over it.
Well 43, you can buy a decent graphics card cheap.. either off newegg.com or ebay. So thats no big deal..
you can buy the new gefore 7 1.3gigs :), about 7grand tho lolz
It is if you bought a motherboard with on-board video. Since most of them don't even have an AGP/PCI-E port.Quote:

Anyway, the point was that they have to allow for software-acceleration with that transparency effect.
and another thing, dont dl a leaked version, i did from limewire, got it installed, then i got a phone call from the head person at my interent provider company, asking me why i have thenew version of windows Iilegaly on my comp, thats when i hung up and uninstalled it lolz, so only installed the GUI ok no a leaked version
oh shit sorry man. didnt mean to get you in trouble.
Thats just xp, but with a different, black, sleek skin and some icons changed.
Anyway, visita is for servers, not domestic.
Win2K was aimed at servers, Win98 was aimed at home users.
Win 2003 is aimed at servers, Win Vista is aimed at home users.
How can I tell, well the biggest thing is how they focus on the interface, they always try and pretty up the one thats for home users.
Of course the special effects in Vista will filter down to the server side stuff, but lets face it, who needs transparency effects for a server?
I have heard though that in Vista they have seriously increased the command line commands and funtionality, which would help in a server environment.
I also heard that they have a true firewall that can block in and out bound connections, which is good. I think aside from the lnf, the biggest change is the security side of things, apparently they have realy locked it down, to the point that even if your logged in as administrator, it still prompts for the administrator password before it lets you run an install program or a non-verified program (for the first time i think, i think there is some to say whether it has been accepted).
Its going to be interesting, and the sooner all my relatives have it, the sooner i will stop doing a lot of support.
sweet deal, they finally got transparent window frames working... nice nice.
