Aaron, if you're going to post a tutorial on the Void, please post the info on the void instead of advertising another site.
If your tools of trade is Photoshop. Take out your basic brush set(Usually the 'reset brush' tab), and while you are using the Smudge tool, click F5 to edit different brushes. Once you have a desired shape, try smudging.
The one I use usually is this method.(Assuming we are making a sig)
Make a new file at whatever desirable tag size. Fill the layer with black(Or any Dark Colour) - BG layer.Set your render - Layer 1. Make 3 copies of your render - L 1 C, L 1 C 2. Hide the two topmost layers. Open the Smudge tool(HK: R). Edit the brush(HKK: F5).
Pick the chalk - 36 Pixels brush.
And do the following.
In Shape Dynamics.
Size Jitter: 100%
Minimum Diameter: 11%
Angel Jitter: 33%
Roundness Jitter: 100%
The left one leave as is.
Now go for scattering.
Scatter: 108%
Count: 1
And leave the rest.
Make sure you have checked 'smoothing'

Make sure the Mode is normal and Strength is 100. Using this newly made brush, try to smudge the whole image(the lower most layer) and set it to 'Linear Dodge', hide the layer. Unhide the mid - layer, try to do the same, but not as wide as the last one, set it to 'Linear Dodge' Or 'Color Dodge' and voila.
Unhide the topmost layer (untouched render) Try playing around with it with some render making techniques.
Here is what I have concocted:

Try play and experiment around other brushes and settings, see what you can get.
That's all to it.
Bye for now.

ThnX DDX for the tut... tried it on my av/sig.. feel free to give some critiques on it if u want.. ;)
i use a small round brush, no scatter, no shape dynamics..
first i go with a verry small hard brush and 100% opacity
when i am happy i go with a bit larger softer brush and between 95 - 98% opacity.
lots off work, but verrryyyy nice smudge.
see my sig!!
Try smudging landscapes or stocks with differing areas of color and exposure to get a good background.
Smudging is a great way and easy way to compose a background or even effects.
Tip: Dont use any strength higher than 70 or lower than 30
