Default Prg's Full metal sig tut

This is my full metal sig tut, its pretty long ill tell ya that but its a good way to get into metal sigs. I'd love to see your results. Please also tell me if i missed anything. I apologize in advance for the many links, used them to save space.

    DO NOT RIP THIS TUT

    Full Metal Signature Tut

    Final result:

This is my full metal signature tut. I hope you like it. This tut is to give u a basic understanding on how to make a full metal sig, so I hope you take what you learn from this and make your own. Any blending modes I show you in this tut I encourage you to save as a style so you can use them in later metal sigs. Now let’s get started.

Step one: open up a new document in Photoshop 371 x 120.

Step 2: make a shape like this and add it to the side of your document. Name it right base shape. You can make this shape by either making it with the pen tool, or you can open up a new document, take your elliptical marquee tool make a circle, while you are holding down shift, about the same height the shape. Fill the circle with white, duplicate the layer, put one of the circles in one side, and the other one in the other side. Take your rectangular marquee tool and make a rectangle between the two circles (make sure that the rectangle fits exactly with the circles, probably move around with the circles) now you want to make a new layer and fill the rectangle. Merge them all together, you merge by Ctrl – E, and you should have your shape. Just move it over to the signature document and place one on each side.

Step 3: duplicate the shape and put it on the opposite side of the image. Name this left base shape.

Step 4: apply these blending options to both of the shapes.

    Drop Shadow: http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/8...taltut2yb6.jpg
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img453.imageshack.us/img453/6...taltut3ng8.jpg
    Contour: http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/8...sigtut4el8.jpg
    Color Overlay: http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/7...taltut5an1.jpg
    Make the color 9B9B9B
    Gradient Overlay: http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/5...taltut6wx7.jpg
    Gradient: http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/4...taltut7xb7.jpg
    Stroke: http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/231...taltut8mt2.jpg
Hit new style and name it “glossy metal”

Step 5: then apply the same style to the other shape. You should have something like this.

Step 6: Command click (Ctrl – click) on one layer, then Command click while holding shift on the other layer, this should make a selection of both layers. Then go Select> Modify> Expand.
    Expand by: 9px.

Step 7: DO NOT DESELECT. Make a new layer and call this Middle Base shape. Then get the paint bucket and fill the selection.

Step 8: GO to blending options and use these settings:
    Inner shadow: http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/3...altut10xp2.jpg
    Outer glow: http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/9...altut11ao0.jpg
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/6...altut12gn1.jpg
    Satin: http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/8...altut13og2.jpg
    Gradient Overlay: http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/1...altut14rq9.jpg

You should now have something like this:

Step 9: Adding texture – Now to fill in those white areas we’ll add texture.
Command click (Ctrl- click) the middle base shape layer, and Ctrl- shift click the left base shape and right base shape. Then go to select> Inverse. Then make a new layer and call it Texture Fill. Get the paint bucket and fill it with any desired color, it won’t matter later. You can deselect now if you want to.
    Now download these patterns: http://rapidshare.com/files/21567962/Feb_28th.pat.html

Alright now on the texture fill layer go to blending options and use these settings:

    Inner Shadow: http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/4...altut16xn2.jpg
    Inner Glow: http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/8...altut17va4.jpg
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/6...altut18xg3.jpg
    Contour: http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2...altut19zm7.jpg
    Texture: http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/1...altut20rf7.jpg
You should have the above texture from the download.
    Satin: http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/9...altut21md0.jpg
    Color Overlay: http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/3...altut22ca3.jpg
    Color: ececec
You should now have something like this:

Step 10: Adding the orb. Having a focal point as soon as possible is important so let’s add the orb now. Start by making a new and naming it orb. Take out your elliptical marquee tool and make a circle in the middle while holding shift. Fill it with the paint bucket tool, any color you like, it wont matter. Go to blending options and apply these settings:
    Drop Shadow: http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/5...altut24ca2.jpg
    Inner Glow: http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/9...altut25wi3.jpg
    Color: 3a4000
    Satin: http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/5...altut26au0.jpg
    Color: 021ffc
    Gradient Overlay: http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/4...altut27ak9.jpg
    Gradient: http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/2...altut28wu8.jpg
You may have realized that I did not use bevel and emboss, contour, or inner shadow. While going making this tut I realized they are not necessary.

Step 11: add an orb holder. Well lets face it an orb doesn’t look right just sitting there so we’re going to add an orb holder. Command click (Ctrl – click) the Orb layer and make a new layer called Orb holder. DO NOT DESELCT. Move this layer under the Orb layer. Then go to modify> expand and expand 6px. Then take the paint bucket and fill in the selection, yet again any color you like. You can now deselect if you’d like. Now go to blending options and use these settings:
    Outer glow: http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/594...altut29ua5.jpg
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/8...altut30vf3.jpg
    Contour: http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1...altut31rd3.jpg
    Gradient Overlay: http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/6...altut32or7.jpg
    Gradient: http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/2...altut58ps9.jpg
    Colors for gradient:
    Arrow 1: 000000
    Arrow 2: a6a6a6
    Arrow 3: dedbdb
    Arrow 4: a6a6a6
    Arrow 5: dedbdb
    Arrow 6: a6a6a6
Now you should have something like this:

Step 12: We will be getting more into detail now. So when I make full metal sigs I like to make them intricate, even if they aren’t the goal is to make it look that way. So let’s start making it look more detailed. Make a new layer. Name this layer Metal Bar, and move it underneath the orb holder layer. Now take your rectangular marquee tool, and make a selection about the same size as the flat area of the side shapes. Fill it with any color and apply these settings:
    Drop Shadow: http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/3...altut35wi6.jpg
    Inner Shadow: http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/5...altut36jp7.jpg
    Gradient Overlay: http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/6...altut37ju4.jpg
    Gradient: http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/9...altut38nr7.jpg
Colors: The white color is completely white
    Black is completely black
    Gray colors are 777777

This is what you should have so far:

Step 13: Adding to the sides. The sides of the sig look pretty awkward right now so we should add some more. Command click (Crtl – click) the Left base shape layer. This should load up a selection of the layer. Make a new layer on top of both the two layers and name it Blue liquid. Now go to select> modify> Contract. Enter 12px. Then fill it in. Then apply these settings in blend modes.
    Satin: http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/7...altut40xt0.jpg
    Color: 3b6599
    Color Overlay: http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/9...altut41lm3.jpg
    Gradient Overlay: http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/788...altut42ci8.jpg
    Gradient: http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/9...altut43rf6.jpg
    Colors: First Arrow black
    Second Arrow: 3a3f45
    Third Arrow: 687180
    Fourth Arrow: white
    Fifth Arrow: 22293d
    Sixth Arrow: black
*Remember to be saving these as styles.
Now duplicate that layer and move it over to the opposite side.

You should have something like this now:

Step 14: If you look at what you have so far you’ll see that the orb doesn’t look very round and the sides aren’t as round as they should be. So let’s add some depth to them.
Make a new layer above the orb and name it orb glare. Command click (Ctrl – click) the orb now fill your orb glare with any color. Now go to blending options and apply these settings:
    * The following style was made by sic.sick6
    Drop Shadow: http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/4...altut45hp5.jpg
    Inner Shadow: http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/3...altut46dg1.jpg
*sorry about the distance my mouse got in the way the distance is 5
    Inner Glow: http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/6...altut47cl1.jpg
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/4...altut48lw0.jpg
    Contour: http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/5...altut49tg8.jpg
Now just save this style and repeat the beginning of step 3 to the other two side layers. Except this time when you go to Blending options click styles. The last thing you should do is lower the opacity because its too overpowering on the sides, you don’t want to lower the opacity of the orb glare. So you can lower the side glare’s opacity to around 58-65%.
Now you should have something like this:
Step 15: That side blue liquid is too bright and big. Let’s add to it to make it seem less powering. Command click one of the blue liquid layers and go select> modify> contract. Contract by 16px. Now make a new layer above the blue liquid called blue liquid top. Fill your selection with the paint bucket, any color is fine. Now you want to go to blending options and click styles. Then look in styles for a picture like this:

This is the style you want to apply, if you can’t find the style it’s the same as the one we used on the middle base shape. Once you have that duplicate the layer and move the duplicate to the other side. Your sig should now look like this:

Step 16: there is still too much showing for the blue liquid so well add more. Using the pen tool draw a shape like this across the blue liquid (you can also make this by taking the rectangular marquee tool filling it and then warping it to look like this.).

Now that you have the shape, add a layer style to it. So go to blending options and apply the same style as before:

Now put it underneath the blue liquid top layer, in the layers palette. Then move it to this spot on the document.

*the arrow is pointing to it. I have one in the spot I want it now duplicate it and flip it so it ends up with all four in the correct spots. Call this layer side bridge.

Step 17: More texture. Make a new layer above the layer blue liquid top. You can call this layer blue top texture (you don’t have to but that’s what ill be referring to when I say that). So select the blue liquid top. Go select> modify>contract. You want to contract it by 10px. Now fill it, then go to blending options, and apply these settings:
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/501...altut55ve1.jpg
    Texture: http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/5...altut56ht8.jpg
    Gradient Overlay: http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4...altut57eu8.jpg
    Gradient: http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/2...altut58ps9.jpg
Now duplicate the layer and move it to the other side. You should now have something like this:

Step 18: Alright now its time to and a top to the texture. So make a new layer and name it texture top. Now Command click (Ctrl – Click) your blue top texture. Now go Select> Modify> Contract. Use the setting of 10px. Now go to Blending options and use these settings:
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img453.imageshack.us/img453/4...altut60bv8.jpg
    Color Overlay: http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/1...altut61zb1.jpg
    Stroke: http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/3...altut62ff5.jpg

Step 19: Now we have to add plugs on the bottom and top. Command click (Ctrl-click) your Side bridge layer and go Select> Modify> Contract, and type in 8px. Now make a new layer and name it Plug 1. Fill in the selection and add these settings in blending options.
    Gradient Overlay: http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/6...altut63mt8.jpg
    Gradient: http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/1...altut64vz8.jpg
    Color: Black: black
    White: white
    Gray: 777777
    Stroke: http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8...altut65bq2.jpg
    Gradient (for stroke): http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/6...altut66kp9.jpg
Now simply duplicate it and flip it’s so there is 2 on each side, like this:

Step 20: Those are going to be the plugs for side wires we make. So let’s make the wires. You can either make these using the pen tool or rectangular marquee tool, and warping it. Make a new layer, and call it Side wire 1. Now you can take the rectangular marquee tool and draw a rectangle, fill it, and then you can warp it. If you use the pen tool just draw a curved line like the one below, you want the outcome (from the rectangular marquee way, and the pent tool) to look like this:

Now apply these settings to the blending options:

    Inner Shadow: http://img367.imageshack.us/img367/3...altut69qd7.jpg
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/7...altut71lh6.jpg
    Contour: http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/1...altut72kp2.jpg
    Texture: http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/6...altut73tk0.jpg
    Color Overlay: http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/284...altut74vu6.jpg

Now duplicate it and move it so they look like this:

Step 20: Making connectors for wires. The wires can’t just run straight into the plug like that we need to add connectors, so lets do that. Make a small rectangle with your rectangular Marquee tool. Make it about the height of the indents in the plug, and slightly larger than the width of the wire. Like this:

Alright its time to add more blending options, go to blending options and enter these settings:
    Drop Shadow: http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/7...altut77zq5.jpg
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/6...altut78td9.jpg
    Contour: http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/2...altut79hu7.jpg
    Satin: http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/6...altut80ra7.jpg
    Color Overlay: http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/5...altut81gp7.jpg
Now duplicate it and put one square on the bottom and top of every wire. You should now have something like this:

Step 21: Those sides still look a tad too blank, so let’s add some more texture. You can do this step with the pen tool or with the rectangular Marquee tool, but with the Marquee you have to warp it after. So make a new layer and call it Secondary Wire 1. Now make a line similar to this 1.

Now go to blending options and apply these settings:
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/2...altut84sj4.jpg
    Contour: http://img455.imageshack.us/img455/4...altut85gs8.jpg
    Texture: http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/8...altut86se3.jpg
    Color Overlay: http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/749...altut87om8.jpg
Now take this and Duplicate it, Move the duplicates into a position so you now have this:

Step 22: Adding holes. We need holes for those wires we just added. So make a new layer underneath every on of the wire layers we just made and name it wire hole. Take your rectangular marquee tool, while holding shift, make a circle slightly larger than the width of the wire. Fill it and apply this style:

*if you can’t find it it’s the same settings we used for the layer Blue Top Texture.
Now duplicate it and set it under each wire like this:

Step 23: Pat yourself on the back because you have successfully finished the sides of the sig. Now its time to move onto the middle.

Step 24: So we kind of have a theme going here were we separate most metal with a texture. Let’s take up more space and follow this theme. Command – Click (Ctrl- Click) the orb holder layer. Now go to Select> Modify>Expand, and Expand by 4px. Now make a new layer underneath the Orb Holder layer and name it Orb Outer Mesh. Fill it with any color and apply this style:

*If you can’t find this style it uses the same settings as the Texture Fill Layer.

Step 25: When I’m making a full metal sig I can never get enough wires. So lets add some more. Make a new layer and call it Main wire 1. With your pen tool or rectangular marquee tool (if you use the marquee tool remember to warp afterwards.) make a line like this.

Now go to Blending options and use these settings:
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/1...altut93pc1.jpg
    Contour: http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/8...altut94zt3.jpg
    Texture: http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/5...altut95ki1.jpg
    Color Overlay: http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/1...altut96vc1.jpg
Now duplicate the wire and flip it horizontally.
Step 26: We can’t have those wires just floating around like that. So let’s make plugs for them. Make a new layer and name it Orb Plug 1put it directly underneath the orb holder layer, and above the Orb Outer Mesh layer. Take your rectangular marquee tool and make a small rectangle about this size:

Now apply these settings in blending options:
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/4...altut98ma5.jpg
    Color Overlay: http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/1...altut99nh0.jpg
    Stroke: http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8...ltut100wg5.jpg
Now duplicate the layer and position it like this:

Step 27: Those wires look awkward going right into the plug like that so lets and some connectors. Make another layer below all of you Orb Plug layers and above the Orb Outer Mesh layer, name this layer Orb connector 1. Get out your rectangular marquee tool and make a smaller rectangle about 75% the size of the plugs we just made. And position it like this:

Now go to blending options and apply these settings:

    Drop Shadow: http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/5...ltut103lb4.jpg
    Outer Glow: http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/5...ltut104rp8.jpg
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/1...ltut105sj7.jpg
    Gradient Overlay: http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/4...ltut106dc2.jpg
Now duplicate it and put it around various parts of the orb, like this:

Step 28: The middle is still too open. So let’s add more. Make a new layer above the Outer Orb Mesh layer, and name it triangle 1. With your pen tool or polygon lasso tool make a triangle like this:

Now go to blending options and apply this style.

*if you can’t find the style it’s the same settings we used for the layer Plug 1.

Step 29: The triangles we just added don’t flow well with the sig, Lets and more to them. Command-Click (Ctrl – Click) the layer Triangle 1. Now go to Select> Modify> Contract, and contract by 2px. Now make a new layer and name it triangle blue liquid. Fill it with any color. Then go to blending options and use these settings:
    Outer Glow: http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/2...ltut110lb0.jpg
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/1...ltut111ey6.jpg
    Contour: http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/6...ltut112mf4.jpg
    Satin: http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/1...ltut113ku4.jpg
    *Color: 0000ff
    Gradient Overlay: http://img103.imageshack.us/img103/8...ltut114nh6.jpg
    Gradient: http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/3...ltut115qh7.jpg
    * Colors:
    Arrow 1: black
    Arrow 2: 3a3f45
    Arrow 3: 394f73
    Arrow 4: white
    Arrow 5: 3e4c72
    Arrow 6: black
Now duplicate the layer and flip it so there is blue on top of each triangle, like this:

Step 30: Now that we added the blue there is too much of it. Let’s add a texture to the top of it to limit it more. Select the triangle 1 layer and go to Select> modify> Contract, contract by 6px. Now make a new layer on top of all of the triangles. Get your paint bucket and fill the selection with any color. Now go to Blending options>styles and find this style:

*If you can’t find this style it uses the same settings as the Orb Outer Mesh layer.
Duplicate the triangle and move it on top of all of the blue triangles, like this:

Step 31: That middle metal bar looks way open. Go to this link and download these brushes. Cause I suck at indentsJ!
    * http://rapidshare.com/files/21691967...ushes.abr.html
Step 32: make a new layer underneath the Outer Orb Mesh layer, name it Indent 1. Now grab this brush and use these settings:

Make a line and flip it so it’s vertical. Then duplicate it. And position the two like this:

Step 32: the middle of the top looks empty. We’re going to add to it. Make a new layer above the indents layer, and name it Texture Dent In. With your pen tool or polygon lasso tool make a shape like this:

    *magnified for a better view
Then fill it with any color. Now go to blending options> styles and look for this style:

*if you can’t find it it’s the same settings as what we used for the Main Wires layer.
    You should now have this:

Step 33: Well its cool sure, but your name isn’t on it. Let’s make a laser looking shape to put our name in. Make a new layer underneath our Blue Liquid Top layer, and call it Blue laser 1. Now with you pen tool or polygon lasso tool make a shape like this:

Now go to blending options and use these settings:
    Drop Shadow: http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/6...ltut124yg7.jpg
    Inner Glow: http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/6...ltut125en1.jpg
    Color: ffffbe
    Bevel and Emboss: http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/8...ltut126kv3.jpg
    Contour: http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/3...ltut127oe9.jpg
    Color Overlay: http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/9...ltut128jl3.jpg

Now duplicate it and position it like this:

Now just add your name and go over certain areas with a smudge to make it smoother.

That is my full metal signature tut hope you liked it, if I missed anything please let me know.

Awesome tutorial man very expansive and very useful i might add. Very long though and this is just showing us how you made you signature, while it is useful to pick out points for us to use ourselves i think to make this better, you'd need to shorten it. There's nothing wrong with it but as this is a signature tutorial, well.. people tend not to want to read a whole bunch of text, perhaps highlighting the key techniques would be a much better idea if you plan to create a second one, you have some good approaches to this and i hope to see more advanced things from you than just signature's. Nice work.

i understand wut deadloader is sayin... but i think it shud jus stay long... i mean its not jus a tut for a sig... its a tut on how to make metallic stuff... he jus used it on a sig...

besides i think any tut shud be wrote for noobs.... more experienced users can jus scroll down... filter out wut u want and dont want to...

i guess experienced users can filter out what they want but it's all on the basis of who actually reads it i mean experienced people are lazy too ;P and yeah it's good how it shows us that but i mean like.. perhaps a new tut in the future could be made just highlighting the techniques rather than how to make a signature this give's them the ability to render their own ideas from how percieve it rather than making it and it being almost an exacct copy because the image of yours is in their mind, this is only a suggestion if you want to advance on what you've already done, i'm not shunning this.. it's an awesome tutorial but it got tiresome half way through with the reading, not the content.. just the length, anyone else got and suggestions? critique?

    lol
Deadloader: yea i now its long but it is always good to start with a in depth tut on how to do it, that way you can make one of your own later on
Kemo: lol I'm not sure if there is that many links, could be not sure tho. i took 129 screenies so its very possible.
Thanks for the comments guys, will some1 do it fully tho?

I might try it later, but not now, I'm tired.

It's a good tut, long and well explained. The only thing I don't like is that the final product ends up looking very flat, and it needs something to make it pop a little more.

    still neat though.
