AMD vs Intel: Which is better for gaming?
I'm in the market for a new processor, so I'm trying to figure out which one is better for gaming. Intel seems to focus on cache while AMD likes to focus on Front Side Bus speed.
If you've got some more info on why your vote is better I'd love to hear it.

I think I have only ever owned one Intel machine, maybe 2. For gaming, most people go with an AMD system.
Thanks.

I'm leaning towards AMD myself because I have an ATi video card, and since AMD took ATi under it's wing it's bound to be more compatible with AMD processors over Intel.
-
That's debatable I think. I've never had anATI card. Nvidia cards have never let me down. I have an ASUS 6800 ultra for a video card and it's rock solid for anything I play. What games do you want to play on it?
Thanks.

Just about anything to everything and sometimes something. (that means I want to be able to play whatever I want )
I play all sorts: RTS, FPS, MMO, sim, RPG, etc.
I've also been wondering if it's worth the money to save up for an Intel Core 2 Extreme. (the $1000 one @_@) that has like a 8 mb cache and such.

Check out Tom's Hardware here. Reviews, prices etc.

I have an Athlon 64 3400+. It's quite adequate combined with my mb, card and a gig of ram. I can run Quake4 quite well, which is probably the most demanding game I have.
Thanks.

The most demanding game i have right about now is probably Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

It seems the best bang-for-the-buck processor atm is the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, it's the one that upgrades to 4mb Cache and is still in the $200 range.
And the Extreme is just not worth the money at the moment, seeing as no games take advantage of that much power at this time and it'll be replaced by better models in no time.

Not necesserily, the E4300 can be overclocked real high. And the E6430 or whatever it's called, will be jus as good for the money.
You can overlclock those processors so much, there's people getting them near 4.0ghz ( or so i remember )
