My first experience with smudge...Till now I was evading it really good but I came to conclusion that it would be good if I learned some other techniques...

try making a new sign starting with a stock picture, duplicate it many times and smudge it using a good flow or create a new one if the stock is static, then play with layer effects, filters and opacities and see what comes up, don't forget balance layers and so on so it will look more consistent...just try that a few times and you'll get it, also remember to try different brush sizes/types and to finish it up a couple of texture layers and the usual burn/dodge/sharpen/blur tools..
