You should really give some explanation about why the rule of thirds works in theory, as well as why we use it in the first place. Simply showing how it's done is a nice gesture, but people won't fully be able to realize the potential that the rule of thirds, placement on a grid, the golden ratio or any other mathematical interpretation of art or design if they don't understand how it works. That being said, the rule of thirds doesn't always work. And it should not stop with text. It can be used to develop the composition of basically any visual piece. This is a "simplified" tutorial, but you should never allow a simple tutorial to lapse in detail or quality.
On a separate note, the typography on this tutorial isn't the greatest. Times new roman isn't the most spectacular font to use on...anything. Typography, in its simplest form, should either be supported by the element, or support the element by itself. If it's doesn't meet these two criteria, it shouldn't be used. I know this isn't the focus of the tutorial, but I figured I would add on to it, considering how much typo is misused.
Thanks for your contribution.

Thanks for the help! this will help me in the future. I just need to learn to pick the right fonts now.

Does the rule of thirds not show where to place your focal? As in, your attention naturally draws to the points? Would placing text on it not draw your attention towards the text rather then the focal?
-
The rule of thirds (when used) should be applied TO your focal. It can also be applied to text, but in signatures, your text is rarely ever your focal. So it really makes more sense to work on your focal with the thirds rule in mind, as opposed to just using it to find a good place for text.
