defininitions of graphics? (another panda question YAY)
so, personally, i feel that the phrase "Graphic Design" is one of the most open-to-interpretational phrases ever.
adults and kids you just meet often ask the question "so what do you wanna do later on in life?" and my answer is graphic design and marketing, to which they ask "cool... whats graphic design?"
i've got my own definition, but i want to see how it compares to others' personal definitions. i've looked up graphic design on wikipedia (<3) and it all makes sense, but i kind of feel like theres a lot of different aspects of graphic design, which i've been opened up to mainly because of this site.
are tags considered graphic design?
what about computer generated art?
idk... just curious

its def a good few set of questions..my personal definition for graphics or graphic design is simply art..through technology, and the word 'graphics' is what is such a wide variety of things...however it all just simply comes back to the simple fact that you are an artist making the artpiece
what is so cool about graphic design to me, is that it can go so much farther than traditional art...as far as today and tomorrow, the graphic arts can be used through just so many more things (horrible word, but these 'things' can just be endless), also whats cool is for example, like what u do panda, is take a traditional art piece and transform it into something through technology
are tags an example of graphic design? absolutely...to me tags are a great way to practice! i would however say that the many things that people do in tags, i would never do in a large piece, or something that i would ever put into a portfolio.
what about computer generated art? hmm, what exactly is graphic design to you? to me, well that is mostly for todays standards, this is the biggest example of graphic design

well the definition of graphic design is the art or skill of combining text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, or books.
i pretty much strongly disagree with this, although to a certain point its true. originally and professionally, graphic design is considered to be the art of advertisement, meaning like book covers, cd cases, billboards and print ads. but to me the art of advertisement has much more to do with human interpretation than expression through images. when advertising something, you pass subliminal messages through almost every aspect of the way that you're conveying something. for instance, car commercials never show their cars in colors like yellow, or even really white, because they're not elegant enough. silver and black are the most elegant colors, particularly because of the way that they convey light. the music in car commercials have a strong beat and a fluidity to them, which sets you in a certain frame of mind, one thats calm and alert. cars are driven on open country roads, just before sunset so that the light reflects off the trees and gives them a golden glow. all this makes the car look perfect (unless of course its a toyota commercial)
to me, thats much more psychology than art. you can analyze almost any advertisement art the same way i just did, and the next time you see a print ad, look at what they're selling and how they're conveying it. i love the psychology of the art, its extremely intriguing to me, but still i dont think it describes graphic design.
i agree, i think graphic design is art made with computers, no if ands or buts. i think its as simple as that. but at the same time i know theres a lot of other ways to define graphic design which is why i'm asking
even though i love this

Well, graphics are visual representations. So that can be a doodle on a piece of paper, an oil painting in an art gallery, or a logo on a company store front.
Graphic design just encompass' every form of art, rather than narrowing down to say portrait painter, or logo designer. Yes tags also fit under the term graphic design, though a lot of people here do not like to think of them that way.
Instead of telling people you want to get into graphic design, try saying something like, I want to get into ad design and marketing, or maybe corporate packaging. This way you specify what type you want to get into, so you don't have to further explain to someone what you mean.

I decided to go to the basic. Since even someone who creates graphics can be considered a graphic designer, since graphs are graphics. Wow look how similar those words are, and yet normal graphs people wouldn't call art, which is what most people think graphics are.
