I'm relatively new to web coding, and I'm putting together a portfolio (seriously this time!. I want to know what I should use to make it happen. It will be small in terms of size completely white and rather minimal. XHTML and CSS seem to be a popular combo, but I haven't a clue how to either. What should I do?
Hoping 43'll give this one a look...

PHP is server-side programmin language so you don't need that right away and on my opinon xhtml is bit complicated so srew around with html and make styles(css) there

Umm. . .for the basics, all you will need is html and CSS. CSS is extremely vital, and it can be the key to a smooth running, fast loading site. I strongly suggest you research that. 43 is kinda experienced with it but he gets really REALLY pissed off at it sometimes >.< lol. It can be very frustrating.
If you want help...
Screw you
If you make sigs...
Screw you

You can always read sites like www.htmlbasix.com and learn somethings from there but that will take a bit of time to get good with html

HTML and CSS is the most important, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is important for your colors and everything, in other words your color scheme. I use some jscript wit my websites and html and CSS
