I think you need to add more colors to them. I definitely like the effects you're putting around them, but make them stand out more with some colors. The first one, I just ...kind of see the head? The second is good except the left side is kind of plain.

First one just needs more depth, it's flat. Use the burn tool, it helps a lot.

I agree, they need light, they are quite dark, and depth, it's only what's missing for me O.o
