Okay with alot of help from Rabies tut (thanks again) I managed to creat my first "real" planet. I tried to make it look like a desert planet with the odd lagoon and rainforest (the original texture was black and white) in places. I'm not sure if I have pulled it off well, but then again its a first time for me so yeah constructive criticism please

Hehe, nice to see someone using my old tutorial again. :P Ok, here comes some critisicm. It's a little over saturated. Darker, softer colors would do the trick. Also, it needs an inner glow, to make the atmosphere look more realistic. And I would go with a more bluish atmosphere for this one, it looks more habitable then. :P Since the shadow is so strong, you could compensate a little bit by making the glow around the planet stronger and more white. Strong shadows comes from strong lightsources and strong lightsources also affects the brightness of the atmosphere.
Hope that helped, good luck with your next planet!

Hmm, all i'd say is there is a bit too much colour , but i like the detail, some areas are just unrealistic looking and too saturated. + too light =)
