    Default Vector Pistol

Well, this is my first vector image ive done (ever). I wanted to get into it, and i tried people, but that failed, badly. So, for my first real project, i picked this gun. i gotta say, im pretty proud of this. i just learned as i went along (all the while listening to Nine Inch Nails and Tool). k now, thrash it, tell me what needs to be done

note: i realize that its a big "rough". thats because i didnt use any curves (i used the "clicky" method so to speak). i kinda like that, it fits. also, heres my reference:

really well done for your first good vector. the silencer should be a million times more shiny. try and use a few layers of a light colour like white on low opacity, and build up highlights. same goes with shadows. it makes things look a million times smoother.

I wanna know how in the hell you do that. Of the many things I don't know how to do on PS is vector art. It looks so awesome. I'd really like to know! Can anyone point me in the direction of some good tut's or tell me how to do it!

Anyways, to the subject...I reallllly like what you've done with it. I think it looks awesome! I've seen cars, people, hell I've even seen landscape, but this is the first gun I've seen. i like it very much! Swell job.

Messing with the Pen tool... that's probably oversimplifying it a little, but it is quite true. I'd write a tutorial, but I'd rather leave that to someone who's actually good with vectors. Here's a brief explanation instead.

When you use the pen tool, you're creating "paths" (be sure Paths is selected and not Shape Layers, on the tools pallete. I suppose you could still do it with shape layers; test each one to your liking). These paths are visible in the Paths pallete (next to channels and layers). It's better to save each path so you can change them if necessary (by double clicking on them in the paths pallete) because they are temporary by default. Then you need to have the layer you're going to fill selected, right click the layer, and then fill.

That's the basic overview of vectoring; ask someone else for more details if necessary. It really does just take practice though.

...And as for this particular vector, it looks pretty nice. Rough, like you said, but it isn't a bad style. Great for a first though.

this is where i went right before i did that gun. theres a really good tutorial here:

as for as my gun, i tried to do other things, but i found that the gun was fairly easy because of its lines, but it also has fun details to mess with (the light turned out really well i think). DONT START WITH PEOPLE, you will go crazy. for my first, i also stayed away from shadows too much (maybe next project), wanted to keep it somewhat simple.

Awesome job man. I've been meaning to get into vectoring myself, and one of these days I'll get off my lazy ass and install Illustrator. You did that in Photoshop though? crazy...

ya, PS7. i kno Illustrator is better for it, but i dont have it either. and then ther is the huge debate if PS can actually make true vectors and stuff. i really wanted to give it a try tho, its not too hard tho. just stick with it, that gun probably took 5 solid hours, maybe more.

i use photoshop for all my vectors. because im comfortable with it. photoshop can create a vector, they are true vectors. i should learn illustrator though, gives me more options when it comes to vectoring.
