sand is the best part, if its not just a texture props to you... other than that i can only give you tips on your render itself..

glass is very thick for a realistic fishtank, should be at least a third of the current thickness.

water is good, slight variation in reflection but overall calm, as a real one would be... try adding a pump or vegetation, a simple glass tank wont keep fish alive very long.

I wouldn'tg mind finding some good tutorials for lighting in c4d, cause all the tuts on sites like pixel2life and tutorialized are pretty much "run before walking" tutorials. I mean they just want to make a pretty render pretty quick and thats all anyone wants to do, it seems. So yeah, some good tutorials on how to create realistic sunlight or global illumination would be pretty cool.

The sand is really great. Looks totally realistic to me.

But, there's something not quite right about what is seen as you look through the glass to the back panel. Looking through the wide front panel you see the color of the wall, but through the smaller glass panel to the right it looks too different. As if it's not matching up where it should. Look all the way to the left at the bottom of the tank, notice the width of the sand - then look at the same all the way to the right.

Actually i studied glass for a while, it can do gay things like that. ITs the thickness of the glass too. But that is the naturab behaviour for glass at that thickness.

yeh its not only the glass too.. its also the refraction index of the water too...

maybe if u reduce the refraction a lil it will giv out a more realistic look...

ok i confirmed... glass wont do that... its jus the refraction of water.. tone it down... so i guess u must have studied somethin else cuz even thick glas wont giv out a refraction like that.. it has to be very thick...

did u follow a tut or somin? cuz maybe they gave the wrong amount of refraction in the tut and u mite have made the same mistake

basiclly what everyone else said, glass is to thick, add plants & rocks and a pump.
something that struck my mind is the lack of silicone and clear markers where the 5 glass plates ends.
if you look at an ordinary aquarium you'll notice they are made out of 5 pieces of glass excluding any thing considered a "top".

    bloody nice render though!
