i don't understand one step. here:

I now want to make the background less saturated or less intense in colors compared to my focal. Grab a white soft brush and paint the focal so it shows throught the mask on gradient map like so

i can't get the result that is showed in tut. my all sig became white/black, and how I have to get render colored and background black/white.

when its black and white , use BLACK brush not white for me helped O.O

Yeah it's a little mistake Ratch made. Use black.

From the colour you brushed on earlier in the tutorial.

The step here just merely enhances it.



Anyway create a new layer.

Brush some white. Preferably some over the other colours set blend mode to overlay
