This is my first try at 'proper' web design, it involves no photoshop or anything. 100% Done on dreamweaver and is Valid XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS2.
The rest of the info is on the template.
Thank you.

It looks okay, but the navigation is too plain imo. Also, popups are NOT cool.

Yea, pro designs also use the entire width of the page =)

no. ibm.com macromedia.com
Project,
It's a good start, a very clean layout. But it is very boring. It's a common misconeception that professional means bland...it doesn't. You can spice it up, use some eye catching color, replace that boring, almost monotone banner with something fun and bright. Oh, and drop your body content down about 20 px's.

I'm not sure if you're reffering to the "all pro designs use the full page" thing, or my blandness comment. If it's about being bland, take a look at IBM and Macromedia. Both pages uses red/pink. They're eyecatching colors, also note how the content is spaced. This allows for the eye to quickly find it's start spot, then move over the content easily. On your page the focal point is the banner, because it's the largest thing on the page. From there the eye just bounces around, because your body content, navigation, and side bar are all on the same level, and have no deffinition (using color) between eachother. Dropping the body content down and using an accent color for the title will instantly show the reader where to start. Try to match the accent color in your body content, with an accent color in your banner image, it will make the transition from banner to body content much quicker for the reader.
NOTE:
You don't want your navigation menu to be the focal point either. The content should be the focus. If the user needs the navigation bar, they'll look for it themselves.

^^The free host I use, works just fine. The only one I could find with 1 GB of storage space.

Whats with the................. Design by Andreas Viklund.
?!
Wtf.
I don't see why you used someone else's "source", and say you did from scratch.
Ah well.
I like the navigation, except for the font. Heading is boring. Like 43 said, needs some color.
