By bounding box I mean a box that the actual content sits over. extend it about 3px (in each direction) beyond the perfect fit size. Note, I mean using a box over each individual element, like each news entry, or each sidebar element. You could even do rounded corners and a drop shadow (tastefully!) if you wanted.

And yeah, my teacher knows nothing about web design. She's pretty cool, but very unqualified.
You sound EXACTLY like me. I'm finally done with my shitty ass teacher. She taught Web Design AND Digital Media (which deals more with Flash and PS) but those classes were such a joke. In my Web Design class, there was a kid who sat next to me who was the "reference." When someone asked my teacher a question she didn't know, she would say "Um, Matt, can you come show me how to do this?" (rofl, she's a dumbass.) And in my Digital Media class, I was that "reference." I actually TAUGHT the class how to use photoshop. Of course she knew stuff about it, I just knew a LOT more. She's going to have me come back this semester too and teach her other class...
Anyways, we used Studio 8 (Flash, Dreamweaver, ect.) but were stuck with PS 7. I've gotten use to PS7, but I'm still a CS fan. (Obviously.)
More on topic, I like your site. It's pretty damn good. The only thing I see that I don't like is that the pictures in your little side feed don't have borders. I kind of looks like really shitty layers. Like someone who doesn't know how to use layers, but I know that's not you... ;D
keep up the good work bro!

side note. let's step off the enflated-head-pat-yourself-on-the-back-i'm-so-cool-train. and take a look around. If you're on this forum, and can figure out how to post you're probably well above the "average" teacher.
It's not amazing that you know more than your teacher, stop talking about it like it is.

the css is at http://adam.cavanaughclan.net/style.css
check it out, and ask me if you have any questions about how to lay stuff out. it's pretty straight foward. think of layers as plates of glass that you're going to glue things onto. you can stack them on top of eachother, put them offset of eachother, but still see through them.
