If you're just getting into PS, THEN downloading brushes is alright..
but if you have used PS for like a year or so, and you really got the hang of it, then its just ***

Custom brushes are made by generous people to be used by others, so you might aswell use them if you think they'll benefit your piece. But obviously as many have said before you can hardly say its your own piece if they arent your own, but you can however, say it is your own arrangement - you might not think it but arranging graphics and cropping images is an artform in its own right, it takes quite an artistic eye to make the best possible selection in an image for the use in your piece.* The average sig is best considered artistically as a colláge.* hence why those who make sigs, and use brushes are generally referred to as designers as apposed to artists, they use the materials available to them to create something that has a function

go into an art group with some standards and tell them that, see what they think.

i really don't have a problem with beginners using them, just because they are learning. but you can't really call someone else's work your own, and when you use a brush, you use their work, even though they made it to benefit others. stock photos are different because the artist using them is not taking credit for the pictures, but rather how he manipulated the picture in his piece.. at least, i see a difference in the matter.

if someone is going to be a serious artist, the change from downloaded brushes to custom brushes must be made; i don't see any other way around it. i can't take someone's art nearly as seriously if the brushing, which is usually inteded to be somewhat of a focal point, is not their own.

i dont plan on doing anything with gfx other than just a hobby, but i do hang around with people that make a living from it. they wouldnt use anything that they didnt make, and thats why their stuff is so good. imo when its a hobby, and when its intended to stay as just a hobby, there isnt a whole lot wrong with it. It would defiantly be a problem for people who make a living from their work, they have to make everything from scratch while "recreational art" can be made with the resources available. so if its just a hobby use them if you please, if your making it for a client then dont. thats my new argument and i think ill stick to it. ... i think anyways. its just a complicated issue.

What about the people that don't have a 3D modeling program or a camera or afford them? You can't take someone elses picture or the brushes arn't 100% yours. That's the same logic you people are using.

What's so bad about using a render thats not yours? I mean, like if someone makes it really cool and good effects its not that good to use it. But if you take a screenshot of like SplinterCell of a render, its not yours, but you use it, I don't consider that bad.

Agreed on most points. Well other than Jack saying that using custom brushes at all is less artistic. I think that's a load of crap. Using a brush you've made as opposed to basically re-making the brush everytime you want the effect just makes sense and is a time-saver.

If you're making a serious art-piece or anything for profit than you should be using your own materials. But if some guy on a clan site requests a sig there ain't nothing wrong with using a few dl'ed brushes. I've got some scratch and fractal brushes that I use in those kind of situations.

My thoughts on others brushes are they are there to be used. They are posted to be used, whats the use of an entire section of brushes on sites like da if the use of them is discouraged. I understand the whole arguement of originality and such, and thats a valid point. imo using others brushes for "enhancements" and things of that nature are completely fine, but when their entire bg is just brushing then they lose their appeal. if someone else's brush fits into your sig i say use it.

i totally agree with that right there.. and also theres some of us.. *cough* me...*cough* who cant even make decent brushes to use towards a sig. Honestly, if u look at most of my sigs, i either use Metal's brushes lol. or i use a few grunge off Da... if there was a decent tutorial on how to start making brushes, then this topic prolly wouldnt be here. All the better designers can make their own brushes..im not a noob to photoshop, i jus cant figure out exactly how to change opacities and stuff of brushes to make certain effects of the brush i guess. thats my opinion

Once you get the basics of brushing/flow.. You can start of using defaults.. You'll get better if you keep practicing..

    Eg.

Old sig of mine when I started off with default brushing..
Now I can brush stuff like my current with defaults =)
    Practice..
