Second Thing I've Ever Made in 3DS Max

like i said this is only the second thing i've made using 3DS Max, I've been real busy at school since my chess entry, but any C&C would be really helpful and greatly appreciated

Looks good, but why does one rim have black while the other doesnt?

Thats just a shadow made by the lighting i put on it.
Oh and if anyone knows how to make these rims a real shiny chrome, could u pleassse help? haha thanks

Hey seth, I'm guessing you followed this
http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorial...a-car-rim/9072
ya?
Either way, cool stuff. Definitely good skills to learn. If you'd like to learn more, I suggest going to www.onnovanbraam.com because he has some very good tutorials teaching the basics of poly modelling. They're more articles than they are tutorials because they won't teach you how to make something specifically, but they'll teach you how things work - which is better.
As for the shiny chrome, that depends on a couple things. First, what renderer are you using? Second, a reflective object is only as good as the environment it's reflecting so to make it look good you have to set up some sort of environment - the easiest being some hdri (used to reflect, not to light). It's possible to set up an environment to reflect with the default scanline renderer, but its easier with mental ray and vray (I use vray). To do it with the default scanline, make a big sphere that surrounds your entire scene, apply an image you want to reflect as diffuse color, go to modifiers and click normal modifier, then flip normals. After that, set self-illumination to 100. So what you're doing is making an image wrap around your reflective objects so they have something to reflect. They should look much better then. Also, to make it look a little more metallic, raise the specular to around 200-250 and raise the glossiness to about 100.
Hopefully that help a little bit, let me know if you want any more help

yes that is the tut i followed,
as for the renderer, all i did was put a skylight and then did
rendering>advanced lighting>light tracer and then clicked render
i had a white plane beneath the rims also. To get the color for the rims, i used the same web site's tutorial on how to make gold and silver.
But i will look at the website u gave me and work on some things... also, do i have to download enviroments and vray? I am very new to this so sorry if these are some noobish questions, but im just trying to learn =P
thankss

Yeah I had a feeling you used ambient occlusion and the default scanline.

Dont worry about being new, we all start somewhere. Vray is actually an external renderer (it doesn't come with max) that you need to purchase. For Vray, you can download files called hdr probes that you import into max and then set as the reflection and/or the lighting environment.
