    Alot of that has to do with the type of monitor you use. I see it too, but I bet he doesn't see it in illustrator. Exporting to jpeg and png / other image formats can cause this. Although I'm not quite sure exactly what creates the phenomena, it probably wasn't his intention, primarily because illustrator uses gradients, and you can't really make vector...raster in illustrator unless you export it that way. I did some research on it a while back, because the same thing had happened to me. Something to do with subtle color transitions. The way the pixels sit, those subtle color changes just simply aren't possible, so they tend to meld, causing a somewhat blocky appearance.
