for the light question: there are 2 ways I work with light and dark:
1: I add light with a soft brush, in a colour that you like the light to be, orange and purple are somewhat good colours imo... mostly the purple is a usefull light for lighting, do change the oppasity when you added the brush so it wont be to strong..
2: work with dodge and burn tool, I burn for making darker and dodge the parts that I want to be lighter, these help create light, dept and overall appeal...

Fire/Burning fx, I add mostly just soft brush orange glows to yellow and red colours, making fire on the other hand can be somewhat tricky, I use smudge mostly for those kinda fx...

pentool, wel that is alot to explain how it works, I would say go to Deviantart, type in: 'Pentool Tutorials' or 'pentool beginner tutorial', those should get you some results in beginner tutorials how it works and how you use it... if not, let me know in a pm, wil try and explain best I can how it works...

    Hope this solves your problems...
