I like this style anime and use it often, I think you got the right feel with it, very jagged and hidden feeling. You already know you played too much with the colour layers so I won't bother to tell you about that.

The twirl orbs on the other hand I would suggest that perhaps next time bluring some ( to give good depth) and leaving others nice and sharpened the way they are now
