Older COB is straight-up melodeath, they are following in the wake of bands like Death and Dark Tranquillity.

Vehemence, Vomitory (brutal dm) , Goatwhore (black/death), Psycroptic (technical dm), Gorod..
In my opinion, I think COB's sound is distinctively different from the typical melodeth. They seem to have a lot of neo-classical influences, ad well as power and speed metal influences. The one thing that really differentiates them from power metal is the vocals. However, I do agree that the newer COB material is watered-down and created for a more mainstream audience.

I'll definately check out some Vomitory, I've been reccomended them before, but I'll try downloading some material from those other artists when I've got some time. I've got Homecoming on Saturday and aside from that I'm working every day untill my 2 days off in the middle of next week.

Exactly, Red Light in my Eyes Part 02 has to be one of the most neo-classical tracks i've ever heard. Actually come to think of it the whole of Something Wild is pretty influenced by classical orchestral music.

Hmm.. metal is categorised too much, people get into categorising bands way too much. Each band has their own style not semi metal death neo classical black grunge metal ?

It's categoriezed because "metal" is too broad a genre. There are many too many different metal styles that fit hundreds of metal bands which sound completely different than other metal styles. Atheist and Bolt Thrower sound NOTHING alike, yet they are both metal bands. Same with Graveland and Bloodbath, or Nightwish and Nile. Metal needs to be categorized because it's possible to put 5 metalheads in the same room who don't listen to any of the same bands.
