drawing is all about seeing shapes. take a skull for instance. its a circle on top, then an upside-down house shape (pentagon). a hand is two ovals for each side of the palm touching each other like an L, and each section of a finger is another oval, three in total for all fingers except the thumb which is one oval. one of the best books EVER is "manga for idiots" or any from the How To Draw Manga series. (http://www.amazon.com/More-How-Draw-...539841&sr=8-12) another great set of books to pick up is the Manga Artists series. They're all portfolios from different artists, each has a theme and a style and its really awesome to be able to copy some of the pictures -- even tracing helps immensely! (but if you take complete credit for a picture that you traced or duplicated i WILL cut you)

the biggest piece of advice that literally changed my style of drawing in a matter of minutes was the headlength rule. in manga/anime, adult characters are a total of 7 headlenghts tall. i always start out by drawing the head of a person, then using my pencil to roughly get the length of the head. i then go through and starting at the chin, stack up headlengths with little tick marks until i have seven spaces, including the head itself. then you know that the length from the chin to the hips is 2.5 headlengths, and the legs are 3.5 headlenghts. the elbows are perfectly inline with the bottom of your ribcage and so on and so forth. using yourself as an artists model is very helpful too. If you want to, say, draw a person with their hands up over their head, then if you lift your own arm up over your head and look in a mirror you can say, "oh wow, my elbow is exactly inline with the top of my head." or something along those lines. dont be afraid to interact with your art.
when i first started drawing i started with manga too, and it really influenced my style today. as hard as i try to draw life-like i still find some anime-manga styles here and there, so if you're really aspiring to become a real-life artist rather than a cartoon-influenced artist, like me, then i'd also recommend really looking into some real-life drawing books. books are the best tool no matter what. you can move at your own pace and you dont have anyone judging you. when you're learning under a teacher you have to show them every last doodle you can think of, but if you're learning from books you dont have to show anyone until you're really honest-to-god proud of what you're creating, which was something i really appreciated when i was learning how to draw.

sorry for the longass response, this stuff is close to my heart because i've had so many friends help me become the artist i am today, and even though i'm nowhere near as good as i could be, or as good as some other people, i'm really happy with what i've learned. Keep it up, dont ever stop drawing because that's the only way you can really fail at art.
